I understand that being an academic advisor is a challenging job, especially with the large number of students at the University of Houston. However, as one of those students, I can’t help but feel neglected in the process.

I was admitted on July 30th and attended my orientation on August 5th. During that time, there was an error in my class grade classification—I’m a third-year junior, but the system shows me as a sophomore. My advisor (Useni Makano) mentioned that a degree plan would be sent out to everyone that morning, but I never received it, even after checking all my email folders.

Since then, I’ve tried to reach out regarding some financial concerns. Every time I contact someone, like the dean of the College of Business or other financial advisors, I’m told to go back to my academic advisor. Unfortunately, despite my efforts, I haven’t been able to get in touch with him for over a week and a half.

I know how complex the system is and how demanding the job can be, but this situation has left me feeling very stressed and frustrated. My grants appear to be split in half on the University of Houston website, showing a lower amount than what’s reflected on my FAFSA, and I’m struggling to get the help I need to resolve these issues.

This lack of communication and support has been challenging, and I feel like I’ve been left without the guidance I need to move forward. As a result, I’ve had to make the difficult decision to put my education on hold until the next semester. I hope this review helps bring attention to the need for better communication and support for students who are trying to navigate these complex processes.

Attended the 4 week Management Development Program in September 1992. Stayed at the Hilton on campus. Excellent faculty and arrangements for the participants. Highly recommended.
