My family lives here and attended college here too, and it is an incredible place to visit and live in. It is definitely a unique place in the world, but it's a good rest from the noise and problems of the world. In academics the quality is top-notch, and the spiritual care is genuine from the faculty. Finally, the campus is a great hub for art of all kinds: musicals, operas, plays, concerts, etc. I definitely recommend going, even if it's just to take a walk! It's a beautiful campus, and people are more than happy to help.

BJU is truly a Godly place. I went there in 2022 and met the most amazing people and made a lot of friends there.

Bob Jones University v. United States. Let's not forget that this "university" lost against the US in the supreme Court in the 80s. They fought to regain their tax exempt non-profit status, as it was revoked for their ban on interracial marriage. Their ban was in place until 2008.

Fundamentalist evangelicalism is different from conservatism. Leagues apart..

If I could give this school no stars I would. I went like a year and a half ago for my freshman year and it sucked.
Everyone has this hollier than though attitude. The school as a whole for some reason thinks its better than any other christian school out there. Just because you tuck in your shirt and recently allowed women the "freedom" to wear pants to class does not mean you are better than everyone else out there.
Right after quiting I got a job at Walmart, way better experience here than at BJU. Would rather be paid to be yelled at by my boss here than pay the $8000 I was paying in tution per semester to be guilt tripped and gaslighted by my teachers and faculty.
If you're going into their music department just don't. Heard Liberty Universty or Pensacole has a better music department and has a better outlook on most things. Dr Moore, the dean of the music department was a music purist and also a bit of a jerk. Dr Cox was honestly the nicest guy there, and if it wasn't for him the music department would be completely full of narcissistic jerks.
Other music students think they are somehow the next John Williams. I met a guy here who any time I played the piano around him, even when I was activly practicing, thought he deserved it more than me even though I was a piano principal and he wasn't.
My roomate thought he was a therapist or a pastor or something. This guy literally couldn't make his own bed in the morning and wanted give me life advice on a regular basis. He was never on time to his morning classes and somehow my cowoker who went to jail can be on time to work every day.
My parents said I should have stayed, but honestly I would rather work as a trash collector for the rest of my life than go to school at this massive dump. Their pictures on their website and social media make it look like it is Harvard or Yale, but really its one of the most depressing places I have ever lived.
If you want to save money, and not spend the rest of your 20s in therapy, then stay FAR AWAY from BJU.

Dear BJU,

I attended for 4 1/2 years because I thought that was God’s plan for my life. Well God’s plan for my life included a lot of false promises and constantly being belittled and treated like an outsider by faculty and students alike—the same people who preach kindness and love. If it weren’t for the few who took me underneath their wing, I might not be here today because it was so bad. Even so I have to ask, where are those people today?

One of the things that encouraged me to go in the first place was the promise of finding a career (or people there helping me to find a career). I wrote to the career center multiple times my last semester trying to set up an appointment (with an 8-5 schedule that’s not easy to do) and nothing. I guess as a woman you assume every woman is just going to get married and won’t need a career. Hello, welcome to 2023 where most people—single or married—are just trying to scrape by. (Note to anyone considering attending: if you’re not born and raised on campus, a missionary or pastor’s kid, they pretty much ignore your existence.) You’re welcome for the thousands of dollars I spent and the debt I’ve accumulated to get a diploma I can’t even use.

And in case you’re wondering, yes, I’ve prayed about it on my hands and knees, crying until my tears were dried up and my heart was stone cold. There are some things a bible verse and words like “Be ye warm and filled” (the same as “Just put a bandaid on it”) can’t solve. If this was God’s plan for my life, it would have better I turned left at the fork instead of right.

I could write a book about the damage caused here. I enjoyed my classes and I knew some very good people during my time there, but the culture is soul-killing. Skip it and save money on tuition and therapy.

Unless you're a pastor's kid or just a humorless puritanical robot, don't fall prey to this authoritarian cult. There are other excellent Christian colleges/universities in the United States. Please do your own research before assuming BJU is the only perfect one.
